‘Wetty Wet’ yet Soothing, Good Carnival in Leeds

The weather did its best and the carnival teams won’t budge.  The Leeds West Indian Carnival went ahead on Bank Holiday 27 August as usual with a street procession to round it off despite the wet weather.  This time however, the much expected sunshine virtually cut off by rain clouds came a day after the event.  The carnival atmosphere resembled being under the shadows of the Victoria falls in Africa.  The happy looking fans, showered and sprayed defied the rain enjoying every moment of the event.  The queens and kings spiced the carnival though with loads of infectious smiles that lit up the atmosphere.

Though a bit short lived than usual, spectators were satisfied for the spectacular, artistic designs and high discipline put on show by the participating teams.

Particularly fascinated about the determination of a mother who did not allow baby nursing to hinder her participation.  She could be voted the best for child care innovation 2012.

This carnival is now a family event don’t miss next August, rain or shine.

The Agony of Neglect

While the Olympic frenzy was at mid peak, the streets in Leeds remained busy for most days.  My camera however caught a scene of agonising eyesore on the 2nd of August at about 2.20 pm.  The picture speaks for itself.

In case you need clarification.  It was an accident scene involving a motorised wheel chair wrecked at a triangular town street intersection controlled by traffic lights.  It is a popular pedestrian crossing that can be seen from sitting position by people relaxing over their drinks at the Palace, a drinking spot, near the main bus station.

People looking over the horizon from a nearby public garden might have witnessed that horrible crash.  Quite a busy pedestrian crossing for people going towards Letap Hotel from the main bus station, students walking to their hostel near Royal Armouries and workers on lunch break at The Palace bar.

A closer look shows scattered items right from the crossing point and the dismantled chair sitting on the pavement far right across the scene.  The heavy parts of the aiding machine remained on the road with its two heavy batteries nearby.  This is not a scene to be overlooked by the city authorities.  The police for sure are handling the matter, but I hope the citizen involved is doing fine.

Driving in cities need extra care to reflect acceptance of the teeming Leeds pedestrians as having the right of way generally in town streets.  Towns are first for people before cars even so driven by people who do not need to speed across pedestrian crossing.

Look at the situation where someone physically challenged is smashed while trying to cross the road, nobody will intentionally do that but a little extra care would have prevented this from happening especially in broad day light.
