The Drum Speaks Volumes

Voice of the Drum (VOD)

VOD is a community hand-drumming group, with the emphasis on community, i.e. accessibility by any one, of all ages and abilities who wants to join, whether they have any musical background or not.

The connection with Africa is that Marilyn Crawshaw, who used to teach at the University of York and still has links there, fell in love with Uganda when she went there for an academic conference nearly 20 years ago.  Since then, Marilyn has been closely involved with TASO (The Aids Support Organisation), an NGO with a number of branches throughout Uganda, which supports individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS.  Through peer education (including music, dance and song), TASO advises both young and older people to avoid becoming HIV positive in the first place.

Every year, on the Saturday closest to World AIDS day on 1st December, Marilyn organises a fund-raising concert in aid of TASO, at which Voice of the Drum is one of the bands which perform.

For the merged pictorial inset, VOD was playing at a reception organised by York Fanteakwa Community Link group to round off activities for the visiting Fanteakwa Chief, Osaberima Awuah Kotoko ll also the Benkumhene of Akyem Abuakwa State in Ghana. The VOD on this occasion was joined by Nana’s traditional drummers to deliver sensational rhythm.
